After doing this for the 2nd graders, maybe they can try out a lemonade stand in their neighborhood. Your hook looks like it would really catch the students interest because it's so applicable.
ReplyDeleteAllowing students to participate in the running of a students store is a great "hook and hold" idea. From my experience, students always like to be "in charge" of something that an adult might otherwise do. This lesson has great "real-life" connections.
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts:
In your "W" section you it appears that you listed goals, but not how you are going to deliver them to the students. Are you going to use a K-W-L chart? Are you going to have a discussion with them?
In the "E" section, will there be any direct instruction? Could you find a technology based activity to use, like this one available at: http://www.abcya.com/counting_money.htm ?
Lastly, in the "E-2" section there is a bullet that simply says "Evaluate with a quiz," what kind of quiz? Is it different from the one in your Stage 2 plan?
Nice job LeeAnn
ReplyDeleteI think you need more details on Organizing the learning. I love the whole concept of creating a store so they can learn to give change. A lot of adults do not know how to give change if the computer is down.
The Whereto, Wherefrom sounds like instructions when I think its intention is for a statement about what the students are bringing to the lesson in terms of knowledge, skills or experience, and where the lesson will take them.
ReplyDeleteWould Equip be more clear if you describe the materials, tools and concepts students would need to be successful. I don't get the impression those things are included but I believe they help define this part of the WHERETO guidelines.
Rethink, Revise, Reflect is based on the students doing reflection on their new skills or knowledge. What opportunities will you allow for them to do this and then go back to their work with informed knowledge, eyes and skills?
Encourage self-evaluation: What will the quiz assess for What are they evaluating themselves about? How would they know they are successful?
Tailor for Diverse Learners: complete the statement "with a buddy to..." How will just buddying up fulfill the need to tailor the learning for diverse learners?
This sounds real fun!
ReplyDeleteNow, the lemonade stand idea sounds great, but you might not want to put 2nd graders on the "pressure" spot when some of the customers are hot and thirsty... :)
I think the student-run store is a great idea; I would love to see how it goes. Would you let them sell anything with sugar in it? That will make them serious... ;)
Also, piggybacking on Steve, maybe you can include the lesson on addition and subtraction, and have them make the receipt for the purchase and the... exchange even!
